parakeets - how far have they got?
15/06/2008 21:20:35 by C J Bearup

Ring necked parakeets have been listed as a resident breeding bird for several years now, but confined to quite a small area. I returned to part of London where I used to live just five years ago and was surprised to find the parakeets have become really common. I had never seen any before, so in a short time they have spread quite dramatically. The fact that they are both noisy and highly visible may exaggerate their presence, but even so, they are remarkable because they look so out of place. If they are spreading with ease in the countryside and through the suburbs, presumably there is nothing stopping them spreading through much of the country. It would be interesting to know where else they have been seen in 2008.
