UK Status: resident breader very common / winter visitor

Rounded brown bird, with distinctive orange-red face and breast, and white belly. Juvenile less obvious, being finely spotted brown all over (with pale vent). Common and widespread in Britain and Europe, summer visitor to northern Europe. Breeds in areas with a mixture of open ground and cover, such as parks, gardens and open woodland.
