Common hirundine with black upperparts and white underparts. Most striking indentifying feature is probably white rump patch which is very apparent during flight. Slight blue gloss on black head and back. Forked tail, but lack of streamers differentiates from Barn Swallow. Flight slightly slower than that of Swallow, but similar habits of performing aerobatics while feeding on the wing. Most often builds dried mud nest under the eaves of buildings etc, although occasionally in cliff areas. Summer visitor to Britain and Europe.
