Barn Swallow

UK Status: common migrant breader / very common passage visitor

Common, easily recognised hirundine with long tail streamers obvious in flight. Black back with blue gloss, white or very pale buff underside. Dark red face usually not clearly visible in flight. Fast and strong in dashing flight, sometimes seen perched on telegraph wires etc. Summer breeder in the whole of the UK, prefers cultivated areas such as farmland and villages.
