(European) Green Woodpecker
Picus viridis
Size: 30-35cm
UK Status: fairly common resident breader

 Large mainly green woodpecker readily identifiable by obvious yellow rump in undulating flight. Both sexes have red crown, male has black-edged red moustache, female plain black moustache. Often seen on ground pecking for insects. Breeds throughout UK except far North and Ireland, in mixed or deciduous woods, farmland, parks etc.
