Tawny Owl

Size: 36-40cm
UK Status: fairly common resident breader

Medium sized owl, regarded as the commonest in Britain. Plumage varied, but generally mottled/streaked brown with paler underwing. More compact than Barn Owl with less slender wings. Black eyes distinguish for Short- and Long-Eared Owls. Nocturnal in activity, though often seen during daylight roosting in tree perch. Resident throughout the year in England, Scotland and Wales, in woodland (prefers deciduous), parkland or anywhere with scattered trees.
