(European) Turtle Dove
Streptopelia turtur
Size: 26-28cm
UK Status: fairly common migrant breader

Smaller and faster-flying than Collared Dove, the Turtle Dove has a turtle-shell patterned back, the effect created by black-centred / chestnut edged feathers. Distinctive black tail with white strip at end. More likely heard than seen with deep, gentle purring call. Summer visitor to UK (not in far North), breeding in open woodland or grassland with scattered trees or copses.
