Typical small plover, rounded and compact with short black-tipped orange bill. Dull brown back and crown, with black head band and collar stripe. White underparts and strong white wing bar evident in flight (distinguished from Little Ringed Plover which lacks wing bar). Orange legs. Loses black markings in winter and bill becomes darker. Fairly common around coastal areas of Britain throughout the year, sometimes found further inland. Breeds on the coast preferring gravelly or sandy beaches and flat areas.
