UK Status: resident and scarce migrant breader

Distinctive slender white wader with black crown and back of neck, long up-curved thin black bill, and bold black markings on wing. Long thin grey blue legs. Female has sllightly shorter and more up-curved bill. Prefers salt water areas, such as flat coastal lagoons and estuaries. Requires very specific conditions to breed, and through careful conservation has returned to certain areas of eastern England in the last 50 years. Localised coastal breeder around parts of Europe. Has been adopted as the symbol of the RSPB.
