Quite large and rounded wader, unmistakeable black upperparts and white underparts contrasting with long straight red-orange bill. Also distincitve red eye with orange ring around. Conspicuous white wing bar visible in flight. Winter plumage shows thin white 'chinstrap'. Found mostly in watery coastal areas, eg mudflats and estuaries, occasionally spreading further inland. Resident around UK, increasing numbers in winter with birds migrating from northern Europe.
